4.1 Implicit advection in Abaqus/CFD

Products: Abaqus/CFD  Abaqus/CAE

Benefits: Implicit treatment of advection or the convective transport terms helps in achieving larger stable time steps in Abaqus/CFD simulations. The implicit treatment relaxes the mesh size–dependent Courant-Freidrichs-Levy (CFL) condition on the stable time step size. The CFL condition for explicit advective schemes can be too restrictive for steady-state analyses involving thin boundary layer meshes. This feature is especially useful for marching quickly toward a steady-state solution, reducing simulation time by a factor of 10 or more.

Description: Explicit treatment of advection terms requires that the CFL stability condition be respected; i.e., CFL . Implicit advection admits a larger CFL condition (CFL ).
