6.1 Abaqus/Standard to Abaqus/Explicit co-simulation

Products: Abaqus/Standard  Abaqus/Explicit  Abaqus/CAE

Benefits: You can now use the Abaqus co-simulation technique to couple Abaqus/Standard to Abaqus/Explicit. In certain cases this co-simulation capability enables a more cost-effective approach to your simulation.

Description: Abaqus/Standard and Abaqus/Explicit each have unique simulation strengths. For example, Abaqus/Standard provides a very general substructuring capability that enables cost-effective analysis of bodies subjected to small strains, while Abaqus/Explicit excels at simulating high-speed events. Abaqus/Standard to Abaqus/Explicit co-simulation provides you with a general tool to combine the strengths of each analysis program to more effectively perform complex simulations.

For Abaqus/Standard to Abaqus/Explicit co-simulation you create two models, each model representing a complementary portion of the total simulation model. You submit two analysis jobs for execution; and Abaqus exchanges interface data, as needed, between the two analyses. In Abaqus/CAE you create a co-simulation interaction in each model to specify the interface region and coupling schemes. Then you create a co-execution to identify the two models involved in the co-simulation and specify the job parameters for each analysis. An important feature of this co-simulation capability is its subcycling support; you can choose to have each simulation advance according to its automatically determined time integration scheme.

Table 6–1 provides an illustration of the potential cost benefit of this co-simulation approach for the analysis discussed in Dynamic impact of a scooter with a bump, Section 2.4.2 of the Abaqus Example Problems Manual. In this case, where a significant portion of the model is represented as a substructure in Abaqus/Standard, the co-simulation analysis cost is approximately 87% less than the cost of the equivalent Abaqus/Explicit-only analysis.
